Overview

Mr. Dean's body is found face down in the fireplace, burned beyond recognition. Nightclub-singer Eden Lane is convicted of the crime. She is escorted to prison by one of the arresting detectives when she convinces him that she just spotted the murderer outside their train.

A nightclub singer is arrested and accused of murder despite her protestations of innocence. Though convicted, she does not change her story. She and one of the arresting officers are boarding a prison-bound train when she spies the man she supposedly killed. She and the officer give chase and begin hunting for the man. Unfortunately, the night club singer vanishes leaving the officer, who is by now convinced of her innocent to plead with his superiors for the chance to solve the case, which turns out to be a bit more convoluted that it seems..

Edgar G. Ulmer's embracement of the limitations of low-budget filmmaking was rarely more extreme or effective than in this tiny, marvelously incoherent thriller made.
The first forty minutes here are probably Ulmer’s best film, displaying his ingenuity when it comes to made on the cheap and transcending those limitations. Classic setup: the wayward detective whose gone into the case too far and now has got to explain his story. But what’s different here is the belief in the innocent, so much that the detective goes completely out of his way at a chance for redemption, to find something extraordinary. The long sequence where Paul Langton stares at Barbara Payton’s eyes, searching for her truth while the train rushes onward shows the care that Ulmer
